Windows defender is a built-in antivirus solution available in Windows 10 PCs for free. It is by default turned on for all users on Windows 10 and Windows 8.1 but is it really that good?
There are definitely some strength and some weaknesses of this Windows defender. The good thing is that it is available for free and built-in into your Windows 10 PC therefore there is no need of installing 3rd party antivirus. Moreover thanks to its integration, you won’t probably find any other antivirus which is as lightweight as Windows Defender.
However if you look at the features of Windows Defender you will probably understand why it is so lightweight. While other antivirus programs usually protect your Windows 10 PC with file protection, web protection and email protection, in Windows defender you will find only file protection.
Features of Windows Defender
- File scanning
- Very lightweight
- Free and built-in antivirus for Windows 10
If you are advanced user and will not miss firewall or scanning of web traffic, you will probably be fine with just Windows Defender.
Most of the users however might have feel unprotected as there are a lot of threats spreadings online or through email attachments. If you are doing a lot of online banking you might be redirected to phishing site and Windows defender won’t protect you against this.
Windows defender doesn’t feature any firewall so you will probably need to download firewall separately anyway.
Free download of Microsoft Windows Defender
Windows Defender is built-in in your Windows 10 operating system so there is no need to download it. If you want to find out more information you can do so on Microsoft page dedicated to Windows Defender.
User interface of Windows Defender
Windows defender is very simple to use. In fact, there is not much configuration or actions you can do besides running scans. By default you will see Your PC is being monitored and protected status on the main window.
Scanning is easily accessible as well and you will have no troubles to find it.
Windows defender is planned to be re-designed into Windows Defender Security Center in Microsoft’s Creators update.
